This is a well-known painting of Bob's which was later privately printed as a postcard. It's a marvelous example of his skill for the realistic depiction of various surfaces: stucco, glass, lace, tin, fur, rusted metal, etc. The hand-lettered signs were copied from existing locations in Paris: "Joyeux Noel! On peut deposer les cadeux dans le vestibule." (Merry Christmas! You can leave your gifts in the lobby.) "Un voisin qui vent c'est bien. Un voisin genereux c'est mieux." (A tenant who pays is good. A generous tenant is better.) |
